I ran exactly the same question in a poll in my yahoo cat group a couple of weeks ago, and we had a tie between Garfield and Bagpuss! One based in USA, the other UK. Garfield's first comic strip was created on June 19, 1978, and Bagpuss was first shown on BBC TV on 12 February 1974 – 7 May 1974
