Explain the saying: "tell me who your friends are and i'll tell who you are"?

Like my mother used to tell me--"you are the company you keep." Meaning if you hang around low lifes you are a low life,if you hang around preppies,you are a preppie,you hang around geeks,you are a geek, and so on.
